Antonio Tajani is one of the Rare EU Parliament's Presidents who owes Nothing to Socialists !

*Strasbourg/Angelo Marcopolo/- For the 1st Time after Many Years of "Gro-Ko", (i.e. that Total Confusion on People's Freedom to Choose between Right and Left in Democracy, considered by Many, including f.ex. French former President Sarkozy, etc, as a Cause of Anti-Establishment Popular reactions recently), the New EU Parliament's President, Experienced Antonio Tajani, former 1st vice-President of that prestigious Institution, (in charge also of Inter-Religious Dialogue, etc.), and former EU Commission's vice-President (in charge of core Economic issues as Industry and Business, going from SMES up to Space High-Tech, etc), has just Succeeded to be Elected Today withOut owing to Socialists absolutely Nothing !

However, after a "Hot" inFight vis a vis his Socialist Competitor, Gianni Pittella, (Chairman of the Socialist Group), spreading up to the 4rth Round, Tajani managed to be Elected with an Absolute Majority of the valid Votes casted, (according to the Official EU Parliament's way to Count MEPs' Votes in such cases), Getting a Crystal-clear Lead of 351 Votes, against 282, (among a Total of 633 VCC, and 80 Abstentions).

A Comparison with the Previous Rounds, (where all 6 Candidates could participate), indicates that Tajani apparently Attracted, at the 4rth Round, also the Votes of Conservative/Reformist MEPs (ECR, i.e. got almost +60 Votes More), while Pittella had Exhausted All his Political "Reserves" at the Left Side, by mainly Adding the Votes of "Green" and "EuroLeft" MEPs, (i.e. less than +100 Votes More than Before).

On the Contrary, Tajani had Left more than + 100 MEPs' Votes UnUsed yet, at his Right Side of the Political Spectrum, (since they either Abstained or Didn't even Participate at the Final, 4rth Round of Votes) : Apparently those of the Rightist "ENF" Group, headed by controversial French MEP Marine Le Pen, most of Nigel Farage's "EFD" Group, and several "Independent" Rightist MEPs.

+ I.e. while Keeping almost entirely Intact that Natural Political "Reserve" at the Right side", (with the Exception, perhaps, of only Some MEPs from them), Tajani's main Base Focused on the Addition of Liberals (Centrists) and Conservatives (Right) to his own ChristianDemocrats/EPP (Center-Right).

This Results both by a Comparison of the respective Numbers of Votes throughout the 4 Rounds of this Election, and by the Declarations of EPP Group Chairman, Martin Weber from Germany, in his Tuesday Morning Press Conference, where he had Focused on a mainly Liberals - EPP - Conservatives Strategy, of Center-Right's "Pro-Europeans", as he had called it.

Indeed, it's a Spectacular, UnExpected, Surprizing "U-Turn" by the Centrist Liberals' Chairman, Guy Verhofstadt, Anounced at the Last Minute by EPP's Weber at his Press Conference on Early Tuesday Morning, which obviously Changed fundamentaly, an otherwise inevitable Unity of the Right possible Scenario, which had Initialy been the Only one Allowing Tajani's Election as long as the Liberals had sticked at their Previous Decision to present Verhofstadt as a Separate Candidate, before he withdraws.

Experienced Observers pointed out that, in Fact, the Most Important Political Significance of such Choices among Various Possible Alliances in this EU Parliament's Vote of January 2017, would be to Indicate a Preference about what could and should be done also during the Crucial, Forthcoming National Elections in France and Germany, on April-June and September 2017, respectively, (while also Italy is Heading now towards Elections)...

Characteristicaly, just after the 2nd Round of the Votes, when Socialist Candidate Pittella approached Tajani at a Distance of about 80 MEPs, while Many Other Parties' Candidates still Remained almost intact, (with Left and Greens Loosing a bit, But Rightists of ENF winning some MEPs more), the ChristianDemocrat/EPP Candidate took the Iniiative to Publish himself a Message promissing to Leave most Political Decisions to the Political Groups and MEPs, while he would Focus, if he was Elected as President, mainly on Guaranteing Transparency and Respect of All Groups and MEPs' Democratic Rights of Expression, as well as on a Key set of Top Issues, such as "Security, Migration and Jobs", as he said, in an obvious Move towards Attracting Votes from All MEPs of the Right side of the Political Spectrum, but even from the Center-Left, withOut any "a priori" Exclusion.

Later ToNight, in a Hasty Press point (with a lot of Exceptionaly Visiting Press Invitees, most of whom don't follow usually EU Parliament in Strasbourg), President Tajani added also "Climate, Energy and Digital Agenda" Issues, as well as "Defence of our European Values".

- He also chose to "Dedicate" his Victory to the People who are Suffering most from Earthquakes or Economic Crisis, particularly those who are Homeless and/or out at the Cold, etc., who should be the 1st to whom EU should Look, and express its Solidarity, so that they don't feel Forgotten, as he characteristically stressed.

+ Noting that the Secret Ballot's rule makes, in principle, "Impossible to know who exactly Voted for me", Tajani anew promissed to Guarantee the Free Expression of All MEPs' Views, according to the Rules, (regardless of whether the Presidency likes or dislikes the points made by them), and to ensure the Running of Democratic and Transparent Debates. I'll Respect All MEPs, of All Political Groups, as long as they are regularly Elected by the People : You don't Discriminate between Goodies and Badies :  That's Democracy !", he stressed, as a matter of General Principle, indirectly but surely Criticizing also some notorious Excess of Oppressive Attitudes in the Past. (I.e. particularly regarding various MEPs of the Right, but not only, since even "Green" and other MEPs refered afterwards at this same point).

This goes also vis a vis the 2nd Biggest Group in EU Parliament, the Socialists, with whom I shall try to renew Links, "despite the Difference in Political Visions", Tajani added.

But, "at least as far as the Election of EU Parliament's President" for 2017-2019 "is concerned, it's clear that No "Gro Ko" ("Great Coalition" between Socialists and ChristianDemocrats/EPP) esists No More. It's a New Era !", the freshly Elected President confirmed. (Comp. also : http://www.eurofora.net/newsflashes/news/euparliamentpresidencyitalianrightsturn.html).

For various President Tajani's statements to "Eurofora", both old and recent, See, among others, f.ex. :

Last, but not least, Tajani's Experience in EU a.o. Political affairs, could be particularly Useful also in view of the forthcoming, March 2017 EU Heads of State/Government Summit in his Home Country of origin : Italy, at Rome, during which, EU Leaders intend to Present a set of Ideas for EU's Reform in the foreseable Future, (as they earlier Anounced at their Exceptional, 1st Post-BREXIT Summit of the 27, during the Slovak Presidency, at Bratislava : See relevant "Eurofora"s NewsReports from that Historic Summit which Highlighted a so-called "Bratislava Roadmap" for Future developments, f.ex. also at : http://www.eurofora.net/newsflashes/news/bratislavasummitoutcome.html + ...).

The New EU Parliament's President is also due to play, mutatis-mutandis, an Important Role in view of the Preparation of the Crucial Forthcoming European Elections of 2019, (Comp. f.ex.: http://www.eurofora.net/newsflashes/news/euparliamentsecretarygeneraloncitizendebatesbeforedecisions.html ).

Facing a 70% Abstention threat in 2009 Election, EU endorses EuroFora's idea for Citizens' debates on crucial EU decisions !

- Different views on "Europe's Future", should be debated among Citizens at June 2009 EU Elections, thanks to political Parties' "Manifestos", says EU Parliament's Report

A main idea, initiated and promoted by EuroFora's founders since 1997: the vital need to develop European Citizens' democratic right to actively participate in multilingual debates on EU decisions, is formally endorsed by the EU from 2009 !

The move is a key attempt to overcome "catastrophic" Polls which warn that only ...30% of Citizens are ready to vote in the forthcoming June 2009 EU Election !  This was revealed by EU Commission's vice-president, in charge of Communication policy, Margot Wallstrom, during a "hot" meeting of EU Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education, during the December 2008 Strasbourg session.

Wallstrom faced criticism, but also suggestions from various MEPs, naturally worried by Abstention threats which herself found even "worse" than in 1999 or 2004...

A Report on "Active Dialogue with Citizens",examined at the same time, presented some useful practical tips, on "facilitating Interviews"; etc., but also a  potentialy important call to "incorporate the conclusions of ...debates...into (EU) policies, and take into consideration the expectations that Citizens have of the EU when deciding". An amendment even implies that Citizens' participation in debates on EU decisions is a democratic "Right".

More importantly, it finds that  a Debate "on the Future of Europe", (as French President Nicolas Sarkozy has asked since 2007), would be a good idea " for the 2009 European parliamentary Elections", because "clarifying the political differences between the EU political parties would help citizens to identify themselves with, and choose between various concepts", for which "all parties (should) present their Manifesto".

A "Joint political declaration on Communicating Europe in Partnership", co-signed by "the European Parliament, Council and ... Commission", confirms that they "attach the utmost importance to improving communication on EU issues", by "enabling European citizens to exercise their right to participate in the democratic life of the Union, in which decisions are taken as openly as possible and as closely as possible to the citizens, observing the principles of pluralism, participation, openness and transparency".

This should "enable Citizens to exercise their right to express their views and to participate actively in the public Debate on European Union issues", while also "promoting the respect of multilingualism". In this regard, EU confirms its "wish to develop synergies with national, regional and local authorities as well as with representatives of Civil Society".

It's since 1997 that a group of EuroFora's founders have officially presented a pioneer Project (then called "EIW", for "Europe in the World"), which aimed to develop Strasbourg's "Polyphonic music", by providing "Interactive information", on "main issues ... during the Decision-making process of European Organizations which engage in Transparent and Public Democratic Debates"

This should be done, inter alia, by "exploring the potential of New Communication Tools (mainly Internet)", as well as classic-form debates, the 1997 EIW pioneer project's anounced in its "Synopsis". It was formally "accepted for evaluation" by EU Commission in Brussels in order to be examined for a grant in the framework of the "Research/Technology/Development (RTD) Programme in the field of Information Technologies", then called "ESPRIT", as a "Best Practice Pilot Project".

eiw_project_eu_program_esprit_ds_1997.._400

But the vital, urgent Political need for EU to search new, efficient ways to reach the People and interact with European Citizens, was really felt in Brussels and elsewhere only after the unprecedented in History 1999 and 2004 Majority Abstention in EU Elections, followed by 3 "NO" in Referenda in France, the Netherlands and Ireland, on 2005 and 2008...
In this New Political Landscape, we prepared a new, actualised and more developed version of our initial idea, in a simplified and more efficient form, thanks also to a large Experience accumulated during many years of EU/CoE/UNO Press work and Multi-lingual debates, with the New project "EuroFora" :

On 2006 we presented in Public its main lines during Questions/Replies that we raised at two Press Conferences by EU Commission President, Jose Baroso, and mainly EU Commission's vice-President, in charge of Communication policy, Margot Wallstrom, together with EU Parliament's vice-president, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, in Strasbourg, (Videos available), and we reminded it at various brief contacts with Commissioner Wallstrom in 2007 and 2008.

Meanwhile, a new Text was also presented for "EuroFora" Project mainly to certain Political and other personalities, at European, National or Regional/Local level, mainly in 2007, but also in 2008..

Now, after the unexpected 2008 Irish "NO", and before the 2009 EU Elections, which are due to be of exceptionally crucial importance for Europe's Future, the moment has obviously come to launch that project, progressively, but in real practice.

Whoever really cares for Europe and its Citizens is welcome to join, in one way or another. Only anti-European, anti-democratic, obscure or ignorant groups might oppose or attempt to "steal" and deviate the main idea.

But European Citizens, incited by enlightened political leaders, are those who will finally write the real History.

Polls

2009 EU Elections were won by Parties against Technocracy and Turkey's controversial EU bid, while the 1999-2004 Majority Abstention trend decelerated. What should be done in 2009-2014 ?
