G7 Summit : USA President Obama on Greece : - "Tough Choices", but Possible, If...
*G7 Summit/Elmau Castle/Angelo Marcopolo/- Just after saluting a Surprized "EuroFora"+ with one Hand, by a Friendly : -"Hi There !", while holding his eternal Starbucks' Coffee cup at the other Hand, (perhaps a remnant from his Family's "Windy City" of Hard-Working Chicago, from where came also his twice-winning original Press Strategy Advisor, met at 2009 NATO's Summit in Strasbourg, and, by a coincidence, "EuroFora" Co-Founder's closest Family parents), before slowly and thoughtfully walking towards his scheduled Press Conference Room's backstage door, right at the End of an exceptionaly Busy Day at the Elmau Castle, on the Top of Germany's Highest Mountains, in the middle of Bavaria's splendid Natural Landscape, (i.e. after being probably informed about what all other Heads of State/Government had said at their own Press Conferencies, earlier Today), USA President Barak Obama almost immediately replied to a collegue's Question on the Topical Economic and Socio-Political issue of the Huge Debt provoked by various Past Errors on Greece :
He took a deep breath before giving a quite Long, but measured Reply, at a Crucial moment of Negotiations, (according G7 President, German Chancelor Angie Merkel's earlier anouncement, that this issue would be probably Discusssed even during Elmau encounters, but without any Decision, since this is of the Competence of EU Commission - EuroCentral Bank - IMF and EU Countries' Governments, as well as of Athens' Authorities, but obviously not of the G7 Summit itself) :
- The move came just after Obama had already observed, from the outset, that, since the G7 Summit "Recognize(d) that the Global Economy, while Growing (this Year : 2015), it's still Not Performing at its Ful Potential", (Comp. other relevant "EuroFora"s NewsReport, with G7 Summit's President, Chancelor Merkel's, Press Conference, and its Official, Collective Conclusions, published earlier Today : ...), then, "we (G7 Heads of State/Government, plus EU Commission and Council Presidents) Agreed on a Number of Necesary Steps", among which, "here, in Europe, we (G7) Support Efforts to find a Path" which cuuld "enable Greece to carry out Key Reforms", so that it can "return to Growth with a Strong, Stable and Growing €uroZone", as he said in his Introductory obervations for the Press.
- In consequence, reminding also a relevant recent Warning to prevent eventual "Harm to Financial Markets", by Timely "Ensuring a Deal" on "Greece" (as that much more Multifacet than usualy said issue is too often over-Simplified by some), the collegue from "Reuters" British-Canadian Press Agency , (that Obama had Chosen himself in order to speak First, at the Small-Medium Press Room that he used, where Press Invitations had been distributed just by the American and/or German Hosts' side, as well informed USA sources told "EuroFora"), asked the US President if he felt that "(the rest of EU's) Europeans" would be "Too Tough", (as he claimed), and, particularly, "What Else" did he thing that it "Needs to be done on Both Sides" now ?
- "Concerning Greece", Obama started by pointing, from the outset, to the fact that this issue had been discussed, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, also with several other key particpants :
- It's "not only our G7 Partners" (Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Canada, Japan : the next G7 Chair for the Year 2016), "but also the IMF (led here by its Director-General, experienced former French Minister of Finances, Christine Lagarde, by another coincidence : herself too coming from a long initial career at ...Chicago : Comp. f.ex., Lagarde's Reply to "EuroFora"s Question during her Press Conference au Quai de Brenelle in Paris, as Chairwoman-in-office of the G20 Ministers of Finance's conference, which prepared the Heads of State/Government's G20 Summit at Cannes : Comp. other "EuroFora"s NewsReports from Cannes, later-on),"and Other Institutions that were Represented here", at Elmau Castle, (speaking, probably, f.ex., of New Presidents of EU Commission and/or Council, Juncker and/or Tusk, as well as OECD's Secretart General Angel Guria : Comp. various "EuroFora"s NewsReports on each of them, mostly on Replies g)ven to several among our Questions at various other occasions until recently), that, indeed, "Feel a sense of Urgency", as US President said for that pending issue.
- And, in this regard, (i.e. considering the Right Timing : Comp. Supra), "I think that Everyone wants to make it happen", (i.e. broker a "Deal", as the above mentioned Question had said), so that "they are Working Hard to get it done"; Obama incited, in Reply also to a Follow-up Question by the same collegue, who asked also if he was "Confifdent that it will Happen Before the (Time) Deadline", which notoriously is currently set (tehnically : given the already Agreed Timing for Reimbursements of Loans and for the Duration of EU's overall Aide Program) for June 30th, (i.e., by a coincidence, just 1 Day after an EU - China Summit scheduled in Brussels for Monday, June 29, the First Working Day of a Monday which follows directly the Friday-Saturday regular, full EU Summit of June 25-26, that Same Weekend)...
- I.e. that, at least, "a Path to Resolve the Situation there", has to be "Found", as the US President put it Diplomatically, at the present stage.

=> - In particular, "this is going to Require", first of all, from the Government of "Greece" to "be Serious on Making some Important Reforms", Obama stressed from the outset, when it cames towards substance, (even if he carefuly Avoided even to Indicate this or that concrete domain, among several which still subsist at the Negotiation's table)...
- Indeed, "the Greek" AUthorities "are going to Have to Follow though, and make some Tough Political Choices", Obama underlined.

- Because, this is Needed "not only to Satisfy Creditors, but, even More Importantly, (in order) to Create a kind of "Platform" where the Greek Economy van Start Growing again, and Prosper", so "that it will be Good (also) for the Long Term", he justified.
+ But, at the same time, "I also Think" that "it's going to be Important, for the International Community and the International Financial Agencies, (i.e. particularl the IMF, since the World Bank hasn't been yet invloved directly), to Recognize the Extraordinary Chalenges that Greeks face", added, however, the American President :
Apparently evoking not only that Exceptionaly Huge Debt, but also f.ex. the notoriously Growing Waves of Many irregular Immigrants comming mainly through Turkey's too "porous" Borders, etc ; the fact that the Strategically Located EU Member Country is currently almost Surrounded by unprecedented Violent and Destructive Conflicts on the South-East nearby areas, from Libya up to Syria, etc ; as well as that, because of notorious Turkish Threats, (even of War, explicitly), Greece has, traditionaly, to spend, relatively much More than Other EU Countries for Defense, ( in terms of Percentage of its National GDP), and is recently Hindered even to use its elementary Right, according to the International Law of the Sea, (that Turkey still Refuses even to Recognize), to Search, Find and Benefit from the Natural Resources (f.ex. Gas/Oil, Gold, etc), that most likely exist in its Exclusive Economic Zone at the Aegean Sea, (a thoroughly "Greek Lake" in Ancient and Medieval Times, i.e. for Thousands of Years, in a Sea where 99% of its numerous Islands belong even Today to Greece and are Inhabited by Greek People with an over-Millenary History there), in order to become Fast Able to immediately Pay Back all the Loans that it was Obliged to accept by that Huge Debt provoked by Big Errors of the Past.
[Something, which, naturally, is not an excuse for the notoriously excessive Nepotism/Clientelism of many former Governments of the Past (mainly PASOK+), during the last 30 Years (1981-2011), which has Overloaded the Country with too many Political Lackeys and/or CounterProductive Cushy Job Holders, inevitably provoking a Growig Debt in order to pay them, that some (mainly "Socialists", then) Governments have Hidden around 1999-2002+ in order to allow a former PASOK Government to Snap the April 200 Elections by a Too Early and UnPrepared Entry of Greece in the €urZone, even Before it does the Reforms Needed in order to Join it (preferably a few Years later-on), in exchange of Shutting its Mouth on Turkey's Controversial and UnPopular EU Bid then, (Comp. f.ex. : Attribution to Ankara of the Status of "Candidate to EU Accession), which obviously Damaged the further Development and Integration of the EU, by triggering 3 "No" to EuroReferenda on EU Constitution in France, the Netherlands and Ireland (2005-2007), among others also in Delaying too much a necessary (and initially scheduled : See f.ex. EU Parliament's landmark Debate on the Introduction of the €uro, already back since October 1995 in Strasbourg, in the presence of UNO's SG Boutros -Ghali then : Comp. "EuroFora" co-Founder's Articles, as Published in "TCWeekly") establishment of a kind of "Economic Governance" of €uroZone, whose Total Absence obviously caught the EU Unprepared to face the 2008-2014 Global Crisis and other recent Challenges. So that it's, naturaly, Not by allowing to all those who had Abused of the Public Sector for more than 30 Years now, to even Add, Today, a strange wave of ... Early Retirements for the same, who now they reportedly Threaten to get rid of Any Work at all for the Society, asking to be Paid, for doing absolutely Nothing (sic !), also many Other Decades, from the Money due to be usurpated, even more than the Past, by various Taxes against Productive Businesses (including SMEs), and, particularly, by more than 1,5 Millions of Jobless (many Young, but also Elders) and many other Poor People, who have already Suffered too much...
Thus, the current "SYRIZA" Government, as "New" at the Top Job, normaly could and should join Moral and Social arguments together with Economic Efficiency, (f.ex. through an adequate "Anti-Corruption" Campaign, and other such attempts to tackle, at last, the real Historic Causes which provoked that Huge Debt), in order to Free, at last, the Poor People and the productive Enterprises of the Country from all those Corrupted, Greedy and often Abusive Bureaucrats, who usurpated a place in the Public Sector without deserving that, by irregular and/or Scandalous means (Comp; Supra), excluding others and over-Exploiting Greece for Decades, to the point to Endanger even €uroZone, etc. But that would natruraly require that the "New" Government urgently Stops to be Pressured and/or Blackmailed evenmore by some Remnants of Former "PASOK" Lobbies, as any Experienced and Informed Observer can find out, on the base of pure, pertinent Facts and elementary Logical Analysis].
---
>>> - Therefore, "If Both Sides are showing a Sufficient Flexibility, then, I Think that we can get this Problem reSolved. But, it will Require Tough Decisions for All involved", incited the North-American President, in conclusion.
- For that purpose, "We (USA's Government) will Continue Consultations, with All Parties involved", in order "to Try to Encourage that kind of Outcome", Obama anounced, at least for the remaining 22 Crucial Days, (Comp. Supra).

Scientific innovation joined to Faith for Human Rights, Eastern Partnership and fight against the Crisis, but above all, the need to overcome the "Crisis of Trust" from EU Citizens, are the main priorities for new EU Parliament's President, Polish Jerzy Buzek, that a 555-votes-strong majority of MEPs on July 14, Strasbourg made a living symbol of the fact that, 20 years after the fall of Berlin Wall (1989 - 2009) there is no more an Eastern or Western Europe, but only one Europe, as the head of the largest group of MEPs, ChristianDemocrats/EPP, Joseph Daul, stressed after the event.
Speaking later to a group of Strasbourg's Journalists, including "EuroFora", the new EU Parliament's President clarified his stance on concrete topical issues, as f.ex. that of Turkey's controversial EU bid, which was one of the main issues of the June 2009 Electoral campain, clearly won by his party of ChristianDemocrats/EPP : - "At present, Turkey does not fullfil none of EU conditions", he stressed, (See infra).

Buzek is well known in Strasbourg and to "EuroFora" as EU Rapporteur for the Framework Program of Scientific Research and Development of Technologies. A Natural Science Professor from the Historic and Religious landmark Polish City of Częstochowa, active in the famous Solidarnosk grass-roots social movement, he served 4 years as Prime Minister (1997-2001), before being elected as MEP in 2004 and 2009, after he brillantly won the latest EU Election at the head of his party (EPP) almost doubling the number of its MEPs from 15 to 28 !
- "Innovation" and "Energy safety", as well as fight against the "Cimat change", but also "Eastern Partnership", the "Mediterranean", "Strategic partnerships" with Russia, the USA, etc, and the search for "solutions to the Economic Crisis" that EU Citizens "expect" from us, will be his "priorities", announced from the outset the new EU Parliament's President, reminding also that the quest for "Human and Civic Rights" played an important role in his experience with the Solidarnosc grass-roots social movement in Poland's History
But, the most important of all, is the urgent need to overcome the "Crisis of Trust" between EU Institutions and the People he stressed : - EU "Citizens often don't understand us", denounced Buzek, launcing a call to "do anything for EU Citizens to understand our work" in EU Parliament : "We (MEPs) need to make EU Citizens involved" in "what we are doing every week, in Strasbourg and Brussels", he proposed. Pointing f.ex. to the hot "Debates" with "strong arguments" exchanged between MEPs during the preparation of their Legislative Decisions, in Committees, delivering often hard struggles between initially opposed points of view, long before forging a majority at the final vote, sometimes more than a year..
Therefore, EU Parliament will be "open to your criticism, for discussion and exchange of views", he promissed to Journalists in Strasbourg.
In this way, Buzek, in fact, highlighted "EuroFora"s main idea, that we strongly advocate since 1997-2007, to systematicaly and actively involve EU Citizens in public debates during the decision-making process of important EU measures, which affect their lives and the society in which they live, (and not only just a few weeks each 4 or 5 Years at the eve of EU Elections)...
--------------------
This is related also to the symbolic gift that Buzek chose to give to the out-going former EU Parliament's President, Hans Gert Poettering, (2007-2009), his collegue in the ChristianDemocrats/EPP, who brillantly won 2009 EU Elections in Germany : A genuine statute of sainte Barbara crafted in Silesia's black Coal by Polish Miners : Those simple but strong people who fought for social change against some technocrats and bureaucrats disguissed into so-called "real-socialists" of old times. (PHOTO).
It's enough to have seen a popular open air mass, at Warsaw's center, with many thousands of people, old and young, simple workers and intellectuals mixed together, with references to Poland's history and struggles for survival and liberty, through various ages, (as fex. that organized at the eve of CoE's 2005 panEuropean Heads of State and Government for the beatification of late Pope John-Paul II), in order to understand what such symbols mean..

But, overcoming the "Crisis of Trust" with EU Citizens obviously implies also to rectify any errors done in the past, fex. on Turkey's controversial EU bid, with controversial decisions taken in 1999 and 2004 to give a "candidate" status and to start EU negotiations, provoking an unprecedented series of 3 "No" to EuroReferenda and 3 Majoriy Abstentions in EU Parliament Elections : 1999, 2005 and 2009, (even if the latest one succeeded to decelerate and almost stop the drop of participation rates, opening hopes for vote's revival after an electoral campaign clearly critical to Turkey's claims in several mainstream EU countries)
Therefore, Buzek was faced with manifold critical Questions on EU Enlargement, most of them citting concrete examples of certain political problems : But his replies were almost always given as a matter of general principle :
F.ex. Questioned on the suspension of EU - Croatia talks because of a Border conflict with EU Member Slovenia, Buzek prefered to speak about principles :
- "We know that during Enlargement, the process can be blocked by failure to resolve this kind of issues", This concerns also other enlargments' cases", and "these rules are always in force" he warned.
But Buzek avoided to directly reply to a queston on "French and German EPP' calls to define the Borders of Europe", as a German journalist asked him by making a reference to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and German Chancellor Angie Merkel's, critical statements on Turkey at the June 2009 Electoral campain.
- "Concerning Enlargement, there's always the same rules : There have to be Criteria, which have to be respected if a Country wants to join the EU", he started to simply reply.
- "For my country (Poland) it took us 15 Years to fullfil these Criteria", Buzek reminded, indicating, if proportions are kept, that Turkey, fex. would have to spend some 25 years before eventually joining the EU..
- "Countries wishing to join the EU need to Change their Systems", as we (Poland and other former Eastern European Countries) did, he stressed.
- "'For me, meeting the condition of Human Rights is one of the Key conditions for membership in the EU", preferring again to speak from the point of view of General Principles, on the occasion of an untimely question on Serbia (which is not even a candidate yet)...
- "Turkey" has, "first of all", to fullfil (EU) Copenhagen criteria". Bevause, currently, none of them is fullfiled by Turkey", New EU Parliament's President, denounced, speaking later to a group of Journalists, including "EuroFora".
In particular, on Human Rights : - "We (EU) can never forget Human Rights", because "this is at the very Foundations of the EU", Buzek added.
On the contrary, when he referred to EU Enlargment for the "Western Balkans Countries ", Buzek appeared upbeat, finding "promising situations", despite "difficulties" in the Past, since "Countries are queuing to become EU members", and this "generated changes", as he said.
As for Russia, Buzek observed that it was a "very important" country, located "in the same Continent", Europe, "close to our borders", and "we need eachother". "But Russia' has 'differend poblems : "They claim that their system is Democratic, but rules are differend", and we must be "aware of such differencies", fex. "on Human Rights", that we can't ignore, as he said;
Concerning China, where a journalist observed that the recipient of EU Parliament's latest "Sakharov prize" for freedom of thought is "still in prison", Buzek found that since the 1999 events in Tien Amin square, "we see differencies on Human Rights still today", and expressed his "support" for those who try to ameliorate the situation.
On the contrary, speaking recently to "EuroFora" he strongly supported the idea for an EU - Ukraine cooperation, fex. between Airbus and Antonov, in order to build a less costly but more performant than the old and problematic A400M, new Military Transport Airplane : - "They (Ukranian Antonov Company) can certainly do it. I'm sure they can. It's a good Idea, and I'd be glad if it was done", he told us. (See : http://www.eurofora.net/newsflashes/news/airbusantonov.html )
