Prime Minister Orban (Hungary) to EF: Yes to European Referendum, but Better many National Referenda
*Bratislava/1st EU 27 Summit/Angelo Marcopolo/- Reacting to Socialist MEP and currently EU Parliament's President, Martin Schulz's rejection of a National Referendum Critical to some EU Policies in "Hot" Issues, such as the recent Mass Migration through Turkey Controversy, (as itresults from his Reply to a an "Eurofora" Question, earlier Today, (See : http://www.eurofora.net/newsflashes/news/euparliamentpresidentoncitizensandbratislavasummit.html), the very Popular Prime Minister of Hungary, ChristianDemocrat/EPP Victor Orban, (who has been Brillantly re-Elected by Large Majority of his People's Votes, Both in National and European Elections), took a Strong stance on an "Eurofora" Question, during his Press Conference at the End of Bratislava 1st Summit of 27 EU Member States' Leaders, about whether he would Back "a European Referendum", giving a Chance also, f.ex. to French, German, or even British, a.o. EU Citizens to have a Say on an Issue which notoriously Affects them too :
---------
- "Mr Prime Minister, you spoke, Earlier this Morning, with EU Parliament's President, Mr. Schulz, who Told us that, as a matter of Principle, he was Against any National Referendum which might, eventualy, Block a EU Decision, while, however, also whishing that EU Citizens have a Say before EU Decisions", "Eurofora" reminded to Orban, (See President Schulz's relevant Reply to "Eurofora"s Question, at : ....).
=> - In that case, "would You be in favor, for what you defend, of a European Referendum, on the Same (Topical) Issues, or Other, where All European People", f.ex. "also French, German, Hungarian or British People, and others, would like to have a Say ? Do you Think that it wouldbe a Good Idea to Advance in This Way ?", "Eurofora" asked Prime Minister Victor Orban.
------------------------------------------------
- "First of all, let me Answer by reminding the fact that Our Fight, which, according to Our Constitution, which Provides a Chance for Our Citizens to Express their Opinion", the Hungarian Prime Minister reacted immediately.
+ In Fact, this is "a Breaking Point", "Because ... the (Mass) Migrants' Issue is linked also to Our National Identity". And "Identity Belongs to the People. Not to an Elite !", Victor Orban stressed in Reply to "Eurofora"s Question, speaking as a matter of General Principle.
- "Second, I must Say, that a European Referendum, as (EU) Institutions are until Today, is very Weak", particularly "Compared to a National Referendum", he Warned.
- "If that would have Not been the case, so that a European Referendum would have a Real Chance to Influence Decisions in Brussels", then, "I would Definitively Say <<Yes !>>", Orban honestly Agreed.
- "But, under the Circumstances" of Today, "it has Not a Real Sense", at least as far as Political Efficiency is concerned, he pointed out.
=> - "Thus, we could have several National Referenda" in various EU National States, "But, anyway, I'm not an Adviser to Other Sovereign Countries", Victor Orban Highlighted as a Possibility, but leaving it up to each EU Member State's independent decisions.
>>> - "So", as things stand, it's better, Now, "to give some Advise to the Hungarian People, and Tell them : Please, Make all due Efforts so that we will be Able to Defend our Identity !", the Popular Prime Minister of Hungary launched a Vibrant Call to his Citizens, in Conclusion to his Reply to "Eurofora"s Query (See Above).
Indeed, this isan Issue which "concerns (also) Our (Historic, Cultural and Religious) Identity", as he underlined, speaking also in favor of the "Visegrad" Group of EU Countries' Critical stance on such Topical matters, notioriously "Hot" nowadays, throughout all Europe, as both the UK's "BREXIT" Referendum, and an Unprecedented Series of various Islamic Extremist Terrorists' Violent Attacks against Innocent Civilian People in Many European Countries during this Summer 2016, added to a lot of Converging Polls almost everywhere throughout main and/or key EU Member States, clearly indicate.
Victor Orban said that to "Eurofora" at the Aftermath of the International Day for Democracy, (celebrated by the UNO and several Regional Organisations, Governments, Human Rights/Rule of Law/pro-Democracy NGOs and Activists, etc, all over the World).

- "Europe must be liberated from this undermining "wooden talk" of a "unique thought" which hampers democratic debates", stressed incoming EU Chairman, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, speaking to Journalists after his official meeting with EU Commission's President, Jose Barroso, at Elysee Palace in Paris
- "It's precisely because there are not enough Debates, that EU hasn't managed yet to make it clear to European citizens what is really at stake", he added, in an obvious reference to the latest Irish "No" in 2008, after a long series of similar, unprecedented events, from the 1st Majority Abstention to EU Parliament's Elections in 1999, repeated in 2004, to the Dutch and French "No" in 2005, etc.
- "This is not an easy period, but we shall act with determination, while also listening to Citizens' views", he promised.
Sarkozy's move came shortly before his opening Speech, next week in EU Parliament in Strasbourg, for the first Public Debate on the Priorities of the French EU Presidency (July - December 2008), and that's one of the reasons for which he significantly opened his EU Council's Chairmanship by welcoming at Elysee palace EU Parliament's President, German MEP Hans Gert Poettering at first..
The incoming EU Chairman was replying to Press Questions about rumours that controversial British EU Commissioner on Trade, Mandelson, was alone to drop an invitation to have a working Diner at Elysee palace, together with all other EU Commissioners and the French Government, only because he would have been upset for some critical points made earlier by President Sarkozy in defense of European Agriculture vis-a-vis its Foreign competitors.
But, as smiling Sarkozy played down Mandelson's reported refusal to debate, saying that he had to visit Marseille for a Ministerial meeting on Trade the next morning, and that "all our British friends are always welcome to taste a nice diner" in France, perhaps at another occasion..
- "It's urgent to win anew the trust of the People" : Lately, "the European ideal lost its momentum. Since several years, whenever Citizens are questioned on Europe, they react with reserves : They even have .. a tendency to reply "NO".. After this 3rd "No" of a People in some years, there is an Urgency to convince", added French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, after a meeting earlier the same day of all Ministers with EU Commissioners, followed by an interview with Barroso
"According to recent Polls, only 30% of French people believe that the European construction is a source of hope. It's only a poll, but we all now quite well, that, since 2005, it's dangerous to neglect these alarming signals, as it would be dangerous to treat with contempt the Irish "No", Fillon warned.
"We all have a common duty to prove to the European Citizens who have doubts, that EU is more useful, more necessary, than ever" : And "that EU can take decisions needed in order to respond to European or Global challenges", the Prime Minister concluded.
- "We believe, together with President Sarkozy, that EU should open debates on all issues of direct, concrete interest to Citizens", confirmed later to EuroFora the Head of France's governing party (UMP), Patrick Devedjan, after his speech to the European People's party (EPP) Study Days in Paris (2 - 4 July 2008).
He didn't deny that one of them is Turkey : - "Public Opinion in France is very much unfavorable to Turkey's EU bid, and President Sarkozy has said that several times", he told EuroFora.
From European Central Bank's controversial policies on Euro's value, to EU Enlargement Strategy, etc., issues of obvious importance to EU Citizens will be plenty, next week in EU Parliament in Strasbourg, before President Sarkozy launches the debates on EU 2008 French chairmanship's priorities on Thursday.
