EUCommissioner designate for Humanitarian a.o. Crisis, Stylianides to EuroFora: Big Challenge for EU

*Strasbourg/EU Parliament/Angelo Marcopolo/- Humanitarian and other, Natural or Man-made Crisis requiring fast and adequate Aid and/or Management are "a Big Challenge Today" for Europe's Values, capacities, political will and its role in nowadays World, of growing and crucial importance, as various  recent Events around the EU and accross the World clearly indicate, stressed in substance the new EU Commissioner-designate, Christos Stylianides, speaking earlier Today to "EuroFora", while Dramatic Events and/or Situations unfold, more or less tragically, according to fast evolving developments, at the European continent in Eastern Ukraine, but also at Europe's Neighborhood : in Syria/Iraq, Gaza and Libya, as well as South Sudan and Western Africa, etc, (See Infra).

This includes also relevant EU's High-Tech capabilities (f.ex. Space Observation/Emergency Mapping, Anti-Virus Epidemics protection, Telecoms/Transport, Anti-Earthquake prevention and/or Restoration of damaged Buildings/Infrastructures, etc), he agreed with "EuroFora".

Stylianides has a Threefold, relevant and useful Experience in this regard, as former Medical doctor, Press Spokesman, and Minister, concerning indispensable know-how in Human Health, Press relations and Governemental work, to which was added recently his latest succesful Popular Election as Euro-MP, (as also for several other among his new collegues, EU Commissioners-designate, f.ex. Romanian Corina Cretu, another MEP who is also EU Parliament's vice-President), after having also served as long-time Director for European affairs in Cyprus' biggest political party of DHSY (EPP), and elected member of OSCE's presidency on 2012.

He would succeed, in his new post, to the efficient Bulgarian Kristalina Georgieva, who is promoted by the New EU Commission's President-elect Jean-Claude Juncker into Vice-President, and gets now the Central Core job of EU Budget and Human Resources, closer to her previous Experience at the World Bank as a former Economist.

Politically a ChristianDemocrat/EPP, first chosen in Cyprus' Government by the Historic, twice re-elected President Glafcos Clerides II, as early as since 1998 (See Infra), Stylianides, who worked also with experienced Foreign Minister and former EPP Group's Foreign Affairs Spokesman Yanis Kasulides, won the sympathy of the long-time Head of the biggest Party : DHSY (Democratic Alert), and brilliantly elected on 2013, New President Nicos Anastassiades, an active faithful of EPP Leaders' Summits anywhere, and has been introduced in Brussels recently, already as Minister and Government's Spokesman. (Comp. f.ex. "EuroFora"s DraftNews with brief but topical statements that had given us Stylianides as Government Spokesman of Cyprus, during the October 2013 EU Brussels' Summit, already sent to Subscribers/Donors).

Cyprus, as the sole EU Member Country to be at the Strategic but also Crucial CrossRoads of 3 Continents : Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as right in front of the Trans-Continental Ship Transport Network crossing the Suez Channel, (along the line which comes from the Atlantic Ocean, through the Mediterranean, towards the Indian Ocean, China/Japan and/or even Australia at the Pacific Ocean, often used in the Past by the former Brittish Empire), is also well-placed for an Outreach vis a vis most of the probable Natural and/or Man-made Hazards-exposed areas.

And the well known Tragic Experience of Cypriots, as far as Human Rights f.ex. of Refugees and Displaced People, as well as "Missing" People, Reparation of serious Damages, Destructions and Losses provoked by Foreign Military Invasion and partial Occupation, Post-Conflict Reconstruction and reVitalisation of an Economy which had notoriously succeeded to overcome a Violent Conflicts' Traumas,  become one among the most performant in the area, (where Cyprus was often called as "a Luxembourg close to the Middle East"), etc, can certainly be Helpful.

Last, but not least, Stylianides has already proved in the Past that he takes really seriously Issues related to the Need to Fight against Corruption, and guarantee Public Institutions' Credibility and People's Trust, at any cost : At the slightest suspicion of Corruption, even unjust, he had immediately Resigned, back on 1999, from his 1st Post as Government Spokesman, in the Clerides II Governing Team, until he cleared his name from auuny such accusation. A virtue rather rare, by our times, elsewhere...  But EU's replies to Humanitarian and/or Crisis naturally need this kind of "Untouchable" spirit.

Stylianides is due to take over EU Commission's Humanitarian/Crisis policy, inter alia, while in Eastern Ukraine, the Humanitarian situation is recently denounced as seriously "deteriorated" and/or nearly "Catastrophic" both by several Politicians and by International NGOs, including UNO's Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) at official declarations since August 2014 and its latest Report published on September 5., with many People still obliged to live with Cuts of Water, Electricity, Phones, Transports,  etc., Schools and/or Homes Destroyed, Medical drugs' shortage, etc., added to a recently boosted number of Civilians Killed or Wounded, and nearly one Million People Displaced or Refugees, mainly at nearby Russia.

Meanwhile, out of Europe, but close to its external borders, Gaza, thanks to a Cease-Fire Deal with the Israeli Government, can now receive, mainly from the Egyptian side, badly needed Humanitarian and Reconstruction Aid, in an area where the EU is traditionaly the Biggest Aid Donor in the World, while in Syria and particularly Iraq, the recent Attacks by the Deadly Violence of Extremist Islamists of ISIS has notoriously provoked many Victims, Despair and massive Displacement to Christians and other Threatened Minorities, added to the Unsolved yet problem of Ebola Virus in Western Africa, (etc), as Draft Resolutions tabled at EU Parliament, during this plenary session's week in Strasbourg, strongly denounce. In addition, after various other Foreign Refugees (f.ex. Workers  from China, etc), it's now even the Libyan Government and a Majority from the Parliament of Libya who have notoriously seeked and found Refuge in Greek Boats accross the Mediterranean Sea..

So that Stylianides,  who is naturaly due to cooperate closely together and under the coordination of new EU's High Representative for External Action, Federica Mogherini, (current Foreign Minister in the Italian rotating Presidency of the EU), in the New, Juncker EU Commission during 2014 - 2019, will very probably have a lot to do in actively contributing to collectively forge and develop, (particularly together with EUC's 1st Vice-President-designate, Mogherini), EU's new image in the World, soon enough.

 According to data officialy released Today by EU Parliament, its DEVE Committee has scheduled to hold a Hearing on Stylianides later in Brussels, on Tuesday Afternoon, September 30, in the framework of the general Hearings' period (between 27/9 - 7/10/2014) for all 28 new EU Commissioners-designate, who form President Juncker's new Team for the period of 2014 - 2019, before a final Public Debate and Vote by MEPs on the New EU Commission at EU Parliament's Plenary session afterwards in Strasbourg.
