Pope Benedict : Build a Europe faithful to its Christian roots, for a more Just and United Society

Pope Benedict linked the reunification of Eastern and Western Europe, "united by the one faith in Jesus Christ", with the hope to "build a Europe faithful to its Christian roots", "challenged to conserve the patrimony of Ideals and Values" for which "Heroic evangelical witness" and "countless Christians.., over the Centuries, consecrated their Lives". Something which is "Source of Light and Hope" for all those "working for the construction of a more Just and United Society", where "the values of Solidarity and Justice, of Freedom and Peace" may "find even greater Force and Solidity".

He was speaking for the "commemoration of Sts. Cyril and Methodius", the Historic two missionaries of the Byzantine-Greek Civilisation who spread Christianity, Education and modern Language to Slavic - Russian countries since the 9th Century, on the occasion of which "Georgi Parvanov, president of the Republic of Bulgaria", and "Gjeorge Ivanov, president of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia", visited the Vatican, one after the other :

Speaking on Bulgaria (EU Member), Benedict highlighted the spiritual heritage of the two saints, co-patrons of Europe, who "marked the lives of Slavic peoples", supporting by "their example  ..countless Christians who ..consecrated their lives to spreading the message of salvation, while at the same time working for the construction of a more just and united society". "Thanks also to this Source of Light and Hope", let's "make an effective contribution to building a Europe faithful to its Christian roots. And may the values of solidarity and justice, of freedom and peace ..find even greater force and solidity in Christ's eternal teaching, as translated into the lives of His disciples in all times".

As for FYROM (aspiring EU candidate), he observed that "we are challenged to conserve the Patrimony of Ideals and Values that ...have transmitted by word and deed" "these two great saints", and "to contemplate their heroic evangelical witness" which "marked by their influence" that homeland, which " seeks to become more and more a place of Peaceful Encounter and Dialogue between the Country's many Social and Religious Spheres".
